Chapter Thirteen

MONDAY WAS AN ODD DAY, I was wondering if it was a full moon, odd. Raven knocked on my door and asked to speak to me. She sits down in one of the chairs in front of my desk. She doesn’t say anything at first, but looks as if she is trying to figure out what to say. I don’t interrupt her thoughts knowing that once she is ready she would speak.

“Mr. Dalton, I really need to talk to you,” she says quietly.

“Raven, you can talk to me about anything, but please call me Beckett, I’m not that much older than you,” I say. “Is this something that we need Richard for too?”

“Yes, I think so. I…I just did not want to draw a lot of attention to me coming to you. I forwarded all the calls to the voice mail system while I was in here so no one would know I was in here.”

She looked pale and she was shaking a little. I pick up the phone dialing Richard’s extension. “Hey Richard, are you alone in your office?”

“Yes, why?”

“I need you to quietly come to my office and can you please grab a bottle of water out of the fridge when you come please.”

“Ok, is everything alright?”

“I don’t know yet, but make sure no one sees you coming in here.”

“I’ll be there in a minute.”

“Are you ok Raven? You’re not looking very well.”

“No I’m not, but I will be once I talk to both of you.” Richard lightly taps on the door as he walks in. He looks at me and then to Raven.

“Raven, you look like you’ve seen a ghost,” Richard says. “What is going on?” he says as he hands the bottle of water to Raven, looking from Raven to me and back again.

“I did something that I probably shouldn’t have, but I had a gut feeling and went with it.” She said as she slowly lifts her head to look from me to Richard and then lowering it again looking at her hands that were nervously fidgeting in her lap. “You hired Carson and Thomas a few weeks ago, and well, a week ago Friday after work we went out for drinks, I thought Thomas was cute, I mean he is, but I thought maybe we could get together, anyway, the three of us went out. Carson left early while Thomas and I stayed a little longer. I really didn’t drink that much, but I was feeling pretty good then Thomas and I went home together.”

“Raven, it’s ok, we don’t have a non-fraternization policy here if that is what you are afraid of,” Richard states.

“No, it’s not that.” She looks up at Richard.

“Is he harassing you?” I ask. As her eyes dart to me.

“No, but, well…” she stammers. “Everything was going good, we had a couple more drinks at his place, he can’t handle alcohol very well, anyway he started asking questions about you,” she says as she looks at me.

“What kind of questions?” I ask quizzically.
